Horner Park Bird Walk

  • Horner Park United States (map)

Join COS and a member of the Galbatrosses for COS's first Female Bird Day outing! We'll be excited to see plentiful migratory birds at Horner Park for this event but we'll be paying close attention to looking for female birds and reviewing how to identify female birds by plumage and behavior.

Leaders: Stephanie Beilke, Kelly Ballantyne

Please contact Stephanie Beilke (stephanie.beilke@gmail.com) or Christina Harber (ceharber@yahoo.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or to be added to a waitlist.

Accessibility:
Total trip distance is approximately 1 mile and will take place mostly on wide paved, crushed-gravel, or wood-chip trails that are relatively level with minimal incline. We may leave the trail at times to walk through the grass for a better view of the birds. Any recent rain may create muddy conditions.

Restrooms are available at the field house starting at 9:00 a.m. However, they may be closed for the Memorial Day holiday.

Weather/Attire/Other:
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please bring bottled water. Dress for the weather. Based on the forecast, you may want to bring a hat and sunscreen. Long pants and insect repellent are recommended. Loaner binoculars will be available.

Location and Transportation:
The exact meeting location will be emailed in advance to registrants. Free parking is available on the surrounding streets. Driving is recommended but the park is accessible by public transit via the 81 CTA bus.

Public Health:
Please bring a face mask with you. You may be asked to wear it as needed by the trip leader.
