Douglas C. Anderson
Bird Conservation Mini-Grant
Local and legendary birder Doug Anderson was known for mentoring generations of bird enthusiasts and inspiring young people to connect with nature. The former COS president was particularly devoted to Jackson Park, where he led public bird walks for nearly thirty years. His commitment to youth education and celebration of avian life continues through a mini-grant program established in his memory. An annual mini-grant of $1,000 is awarded to a local educator or organization working on youth-driven community projects that further bird conservation, education, and advocacy.
2023 Recipients: The Monarchs
The Monarchs were the inaugural grant recipient. This network of homeschool families applied for the grant to educate and inspire their students, fostering a love of nature and opening them up to the world of birds in their neighborhood parks. The Monarchs used the grant to provide binoculars to the new birders, support bird watching trips, conduct a habitat clean up and equip the kids to celebrate birds through art. The COS was thrilled to partner with the Monarchs and lead a couple of excursions with the youngsters to spot birds in Jackson Park.
