Field Trips and Programs

COS is thrilled to host various events and experiences throughout the year that invite you to explore, learn, and connect with other bird fans. Whether in a neighborhood park, online, or in a meeting hall, most programs are free and open to all. Check out the calendar to see what’s up next.

The Chicago Ornithological Society celebrates and supports diversity, equity and inclusion in our membership and all activities.

People of all backgrounds are welcome to join COS and to participate in field trips, program meetings, conservation and habitat management work, social events, and governance of the society.

COS seeks to bring the joy of birdwatching to a wide variety of people of all races, genders, sexual orientation and economic circumstances.

Just as all people should be treated with respect, so should the diverse array of birds, plants and animals encountered at events.

Field Trips

COS hosts dozens of free field trips each year, all year long, throughout Chicagoland and beyond. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic trip leaders will help you explore a forest preserve, identify a singing sparrow, or spot an elusive spring migrant. Past trips have included stewardship days at the Magic Hedge, Spanish-language outings, canoe excursions, woodcock walks, and owl prowls. Check out the COS blog for highlights from our trips. Whether you are just trying out a new set of binoculars or a seasoned birder, you are welcome.

Birds & Bytes

Through our virtual program series Birds & Bytes we bring speakers from around the world to your computer screen. The series was born from the pandemic but continues with topics ranging from bird identification, conversations with authors and experts, and paths to advocacy and action.

Classes and Community Gatherings

We host several free community programs that provide a deep dive into topics from Big Years to international travel, photography, and conservation. These programs are a chance to gather and learn together.

Compelling Voices Series

In partnership with the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and the Chicago Bird Alliance, we are proud to deliver the Compelling Voices in Birding and Conservation series. The series features local and global speakers with distinctive experiences and underrepresented perspectives in the birding community.

Field Trip Checklists

See where we have been and what we have seen! We have COS checklists on eBird going back to 1912, and track our field trip sightings.
