Nelson's and LeConte's Sparrows are among the most sought-after fall migrants. Come join COS as we search for these orange, sharp-tailed sparrows at one of the most consistent locations for them, Park 566.
This will be an intermediate walk and will involve treading through deep grass. We will call out identifications for all the birds seen but the focus will be on these two species. If found, we will take our time to make sure participants get good looks and photos. It could involve staying in one area of the park for a good amount of time. It is not likely that we'll cover the entire park. Given that participants will be limited to 8 for this walk, please be sure to notify the trip leaders if you cannot attend.
Leader: Carl Giometti and Jeff Bilsky
You must RSVP in advance. Pre-registration is required for the bird walk. Please contact Carl (chicagiometti@gmail.com) or aerin tedesco (aerintedesco@gmail.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions.
Safety Instructions:
- In order to attend you must be FULLY VACCINATED.
- Please bring a face mask with you. You may be asked to wear it as needed by the trip leader.

The best place to park is along Lakeshore Drive (see image below) Wear sturdy boots, we will likely encounter some mud. Binoculars at a minimum (we will have pairs you can borrow) A scope will be helpful for scanning the lake but not necessary. Dress warm! This site is exposed and winds can often be harsh. Note, there are no bathroom facilities at park 566.
