Paul Douglas Bird Walk

  • Paul Douglas Forest Preserve (map)

Journey to northwest Cook County for a tour of the vast, rolling wetland/grassland complex of Paul Douglas Forest Preserve. This large tract features a mixture of grassland, mature and young forests, a marsh and a pond, all of which provide cover and food for migrating and resident birds. The autumn prairie can be particularly good for rarer sparrows such Nelson’s and LeConte’s and both waterfowl and raptors may be present, depending on migration conditions overnight.
For attendees who want to see more ducks and other waterfowl, at about 11:00, we’ll drive over to Baker’s Lake (about 10 – 15 minutes from Paul Douglas) which is a terrific spot for migrating water birds. Bring a spotting scope if you have one as the lake is wide. We will bird from both the north and south shores of the lake.

Special instructions: The walk at Paul Douglas will be long and off paved paths, so wear sturdy footwear, bring plenty of water and snacks in your backpack, dress for the weather and wear long pants to deter ticks.

YOU MUST RSVP IN ADVANCE! THERE WILL BE NO IN-PERSON SIGN UP!
