Riis Park Bird Walk

  • Riis Park 6100 West Fullerton Avenue Chicago, IL, 60639 United States (map)

Join us for a slow-paced outing at Riis Park in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood. In late mid October this underbirded park is bustling with migrants, including Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, kinglets, sparrows, and late warblers, as well as winter residents such as Cooper's Hawks, White-throated Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos.

Leader: Robyn Detterline

You must RSVP in advance! Pre-registration is required for the bird walk. Please contact Robyn Detterline (rdetterline@gmail.com) or Chris Holden (twoheadedvireo@gmail.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions.

Accessibility:
Total trip distance is approximately 1 mile and will take place mostly on wide paved, crushed-gravel, or wood-chip trails that are relatively level with minimal incline. We may leave the trail at times to walk through the grass for a better view of the birds. Any recent rain may create muddy conditions.

Restrooms are unavailable.

Weather/Attire/Other:
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please bring bottled water. Dress for the weather. Based on the forecast, you may want to bring a light jacket. Loaner binoculars will be available.

Location and Transportation:
The exact meeting location will be emailed in advance to registrants. Free parking is available at the parking lot. There is also street parking.  The location is accessible by public transit via the #74 Fullerton Bus, #76 Diversey Bus, and #91 Austin Bus.

Public Health:
Please bring a face mask with you. You may be asked to wear it as needed by the trip leader.
