Big Marsh Bird Walk

  • Big Marsh Park 11559 S Stony Is Ave Chicago, IL, 60617 United States (map)

Join COS trip leaders, Stephanie & Jake, for a tour of Big Marsh in the winter. We'll look for wintering raptors and songbirds, and if open water is available we'll also be scanning the marsh for waterfowl. Depending on conditions and bird activity, we may also make a second stop at neighboring Indian Ridge Marsh.

Leaders: Stephanie Beilke and Jake Vinsel

You must RSVP in advance. Pre-registration is required for the bird walk. Please contact Stephanie Beilke (stephanie.beilke@gmail.com) or Aerin Tedesco (aerintedesco@gmail.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions.

Accessibility:
Total trip distance is approximately 2 miles and will take place mostly on wide paved, crushed-gravel, or wood-chip trails that are relatively level with minimal incline. We may leave the trail at times to walk through the grass for a better view of the birds. Recent rain and snow may create muddy and/or icy conditions.
Portable bathrooms are always open. The visitor center also has bathrooms but is closed on Sundays.

Weather/Attire/Other:
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please bring bottled water. Dress for the weather. Based on the forecast, you may want to bring a heavy coat, hat, and gloves. Loaner binoculars will be available.

Location and Transportation:
The exact meeting location will be emailed in advance to registrants. Free parking is available at the Big Marsh Parking Lot. Big Marsh Park is not accessible by public transit.

Public Health:
Please bring a face mask with you. You may be asked to wear it as needed by the trip leader.
