There’s more to Garfield Park than just the Conservatory. Join COS on a walk through the oldest of Chicago’s original West Side parks. It will be peak migration so we’ll be on the lookout for warblers, tanagers, buntings, and orioles taking a pit stop before continuing on their journey. The lagoons are always a great spot to see herons and other waders and water birds. Beginning birders are welcome and we will have extra binoculars available. The Community Steward for Garfield Park will also be on hand to answer questions about improving and maintaining the natural areas.
Leaders: Christina Harber, Russell Weiss, Carol Johnson
You must RSVP in advance. Pre-registration is required for the bird walk. Please contact Christina (ceharber@yahoo.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions.
We’ll walk through relatively flat terrain and stay on the paved path unless we want to step into the grass for a closer look at a bird. Surfaces may be uneven and muddy. We will cover approximately 1 mile. Restrooms are available at the field house from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Please bring a bottle of water to keep hydrated.
Garfield Park is accessible by Green Line (Conservatory-Central Park Drive station), bus (routes 20 and 82), and by car (parking is free at the Fieldhouse lot). Meet by the Fieldhouse (exact meet point will be emailed in advance to registrants).
In order to attend you must be FULLY VACCINATED. Please bring a face mask with you. You may be asked to wear it as needed by the trip leader.
