Birding is for everyone!
Curious about what it takes to get started, what resources are available, or where to even go? Then join members of Chicago’s vibrant birding community at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary for our first ever Beginning Birding Open House! Experts will be on hand to answer any and all questions you may have about birds and bird watching while also offering real time birding tips and guidance at one of the nation’s premier bird watching locations. All are welcome at this free event designed to help you toward your birding goals.
Bring your binoculars if you have them, but loaner binoculars will be available on the day of. Event photography will be taking place. Pre-registration is not required but your RSVP is appreciated and helps us plan a great event.

This event is a collaborative effort of the Chicago Park District, Chicago Ornithological Society, Chicago Audubon Society, Illinois Ornithological Society, Lake-Cook Audubon, Feminist Bird Club, Out in Nature, Friends of the Parks, Chicago BIPOC Birders, and the Montrose Natural Area Stewards.

Begin your journey at the lawn just west of the sanctuary entrance where volunteers will orient you to the many locations and activities. Google Maps pin:

Metered parking is available on Montrose Harbor Drive and free parking is available on Montrose Avenue. Montrose Bird Sanctuary is accessible by public transit via the 78 bus.
Accessibility:
The bird sanctuary trails are a combination of asphalt paved, packed dirt, and sand trails that all involve minor elevation changes. Any recent rain may create muddy conditions on unpaved trails.
Portable toilets are available 24 hours throughout the park adjacent to the sanctuary. Restrooms in the nearby beach house may not be available this time of year.
Weather/Attire:
Dress for the weather; the lakefront in October can be quite windy and cooler than temperatures inland. Based on the forecast, you may want to bring a hat, sunscreen, and a jacket. Wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing a water bottle are highly recommended. This event will take place in most weather conditions but may be canceled in the event of heavy rain, thunder, lighting, or other extreme weather event.
