We'll hike a couple of the canyons at Starved Rock, looking for residents and winter migrants like woodpeckers, kinglets and maybe winter wrens. We'll then look along the Illinois river from Lone Point shelter for Bald Eagles and waterfowl. If time permits, we can drive to the west side of Starved Rock park to look for other winter songbirds in St. Louis Canyon. We will also get to see the frozen waterfalls in these canyons.
Notes: This will be a beautiful but cold trip. Sturdy winter boots and warm clothing are essential for this hike. At times, we'll be walking on the ice that coats the flooded bottoms of the canyons.
