Join COS as we travel to the sandy oak savannas of Iroquois County, one of the last remaining strongholds of Eastern Whip-poor-will in the Chicago region. We will listen for (and maybe see) these enigmatic and in decline birds and also keep an eye (or ear) out for other nocturnal birds such as nighthawks and owls along the way.
This year's hunt will end with a special twist! Well will be joined by local moth expert Trevor Edmonson who will reveal the amazing diversity of moths present and primary food source of the evening's avian target. Our hike/drive in search of Whip-poor-wills crescendo end at Trevor's moth observation station where we will also enjoy some snacks and conclude the evening.
This trip will involve a combination of hiking and driving to various observation locations. Please come prepared with ample insect protection of your choice and a bottle of water.
