Socially Distant Big Day, Part III

HAPPENING NOW!!! Wherever you are, whatever you’re seeing, we want to hear from you. Visit the COS Facebook group to share your observations and view the live, updated list. To participate on Twitter and/or Instagram, use the hashtag #SociallyDistantBigDay

Just over a year ago, our lives ground to a halt as migration was just taking off. To make the most of our newfound and uncertain situation, we turned to something we could be certain of, the birds, and hosted two very fun and successful Socially Distant Big Days. Birders from across the country shared the birds they observed from their homes and built day lists just shy of 100 species.

Now as vaccines become widely available and an end to quarantine is in sight (knock on wood), it’s time to double down so we can beat this pandemic once and for all. To celebrate all adults becoming eligible for vaccination in Illinois (April 12th) and entering the home stretch, we’re calling on birders everywhere to stay home just a bit longer and look for birds. Let’s end the Socially Distant Big Day trilogy with more birders, birds, and hope than the last two combined!

All bird enthusiasts are welcome to join, no matter your age, experience, or background. Members and non-members alike are encouraged to join us and observers can be located anywhere in the country, not just chicagoland. The only condition is that the birds you report are in fact seen from the premises of your home. On April 14th from midnight to midnight, share your observations with us via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #SociallyDistantBigDay
