In Memoriam, Claire Halpin
The birding community lost a dear friend and colleague this week. On June 14, Claire Halpin passed suddenly—and far too early—from this world.
Words cannot describe the loss we feel. Claire served on the board of the Chicago Ornithological Society since 2021, most recently as treasurer, and was instrumental in seeing numerous successful projects through. As part of the Calumet Initiative team, she worked on various conservation projects in that region. She was also an active member of the Bird Friendly Chicago team, contributing her architecture know-how to the struggle to convince Chicago to adopt a bird friendly building ordinance. All who knew Claire and worked with her know that, though small in stature and quiet in demeanor, Claire’s heart was enormous, her talents were broad and deep, her energy was boundless, and her commitment to the work of conservation was as firm as her smile was soft.
To Claire’s mother and her family we offer our deepest sympathy. We hope that the knowledge of how profoundly Claire has touched so many can be a source of solace for you in your loss.
Rest in peace, Claire Halpin.
