LaBagh Woods/Lower North Branch Stewardship Update: Spring 2023
words by Katy Krigbaum
Plantings. Almost 200 understory shrubs and trees were put into the ground this spring, including the 54 that overwintered in Linda and Dennis Marton’s backyard due to the cage vandalism last fall. We are now into our ninth year of this pioneering avian-based understory restoration. 4,426 native trees and shrubs, selected for their benefit to birds, have been added so far to the understory at LaBagh. We are so proud of our work!
Oxbow Prairie. Oxbow Prairie, located just south of Bunker Hill on the North Branch of the Chicago River, has requested that COS purchase shrubs and trees for that site. Since the objective of the LNB fund has been to provide funds for the shrub layer at forest preserves on the North Branch of the Chicago River north of LaBagh, this is a very welcome development.
Leadership. The volunteer leaders at LaBagh have really developed a level of organization that is a wonder to behold. Cages are being geolocated on maps, protocols for monitoring the plantings are being developed, and planting days are well planned.
Volunteers. A huge thank you from COS to all the volunteers at LaBagh who have removed acres of buckthorn, improved muddy trails, sawed fallen trees, and planted and fenced our shrubs and trees. Their work has enabled native plants to thrive there, providing habitat and food for migratory and resident birds.
Continuing Vandalism. Cage vandalism resumed in April. If you see anyone taking down fencing at LaBagh, please call the Forest Preserves Police at 708-771-1001.
You can help! We would welcome your help in this unique restoration effort, whether in time or money. (Or both!) Visit our LaBagh/North Branch page to find information about our workdays and how to donate. Thank you!
