Trip Summary - LaBagh Woods - May 12

I don't even know the last time I lead a serious bird walk at LaBagh, June of 2019??? No the beer soaked "bird walk" at Beer in the Woods 2019 does not count, Friends of the Forest Preserve.

Today, I was joined by 6 intrepid souls who met me at 7am to explore LaBagh for bird life and what ever else interesting we could find with my COS LaBagh Wednesday bird walk. Wendy, Mary, Chris, Michelle, Angie & Sean and I had a pretty nice morning, all things considered.

But I forgot to take a group photo until after Wendy, Angie and Sean left at 930am, but I did remember to take one with Mary, Chris and Michelle, here along the river.

I asked all the participants ahead of time what bird they would see that would make them break out in dance, and any owl was the most popular answer, followed by Indigo Bunting. We managed both of those early, and the dancing was a bit lame, but there was dancing.

Also had the Coop on its nest; a pair of Black-crowned Night-Herons, one in the slough and one along the river; everyone in my group will never hear a Baltimore Oriole again without being able to ID it; and finally, before I left this Green Heron showed quite nicely in the sun in the slough.

It was quite busy from 7am until about 830am at grove #3 and at the trestle. Had a hard time leaving the trestle, but the group was ready to keep exploring. Once we left the trestle things got much quieter, though we still had nice finds.

For those who care, my 2 hours waiting for the Broad-billed Hummingbird did not pay any dividends, though I did see a male and female Ruby-throated Hummingbird, and met some real nice people.

Migration looks like it is on tonight, Wednesday, May 12th... need to get to LaBagh early again tomorrow to see what new treats arrive.
